Travel Tips: Getting Rid Of Homesickness
Posted in Travel Tips on Mar 14th, 2008
Have you ever felt homesick when you are far away from home, perhaps when you have traveled overseas? I have and over the years traveling about, I have learned a few things which keep me away from feeling homesick during travel.
You will be able to handle the feeling of being homesick if you understand why we feel homesick. If you are having homesickness, it means you are not getting used to the new place as well as you are missing something or someone.
The way to handle homesickness is to recognize you are just yearning for something familiar. You can deal with it if you can just call back and speak to someone you love. If you know you will be unable to call back during your travel, it is a good idea to carry with you a family photo.
In this case, whenever you miss home, you can always look at the family photo and realize that somewhere in this world, there are people who love you so much and are eagerly waiting for your return. You will feel better knowing that no matter where you are, you always have love.
On the other hand, the best thing to do is to get busy with your daily travel activities which can make your forget home and forget feeling homesick. Often, I noticed from my own experience being far from home, homesickness is the result of loneliness and loneliness is the result of lacking companionship.
You can socialize in your new environment and make new acquaintances. Make it a point to make new friends in your new environment. In this way, when you have someone to talk to, you wont remember or feel homesick that much. A safe way to establish this is by becoming a member of sports club and go for the gym. If you are women you can go for aerobic classes.
I don’t like the idea of socializing in places like the bar or discotheques because we can not be sure of the identity of those who goes there. You may end up befriending someone involved criminal activities such as syndicate which try to cheat tourists. So be careful socializing in places like this.
If all this fail to help, have patience. Sooner or later you will return home and be with your loved one. If it will take you quite sometime before you return home, such as maybe you are working far away from home in a different country, know that you are where you are for a good reason. This should give you some motivation.
Ultimately, you cannot get rid of homesickness overnight. It takes time. So give it sometime and in the meantime, keep yourself healthy, positive and enjoy what you have at hand for now. Soon you will feel better.
