Tips To Staying Safe While Travelling

The most important factor to consider when traveling abroad is about how safe you will be being in that country. We want to experience a safe and pleasant time being there. Research about the country you are going to visit and find out what will be your risks being there.

This is especially true for an American citizen or a European. It is important to find out whether the country you are going to visit is hostile towards the U.S. If the country is especially hostile towards the U.S., you might not want to travel there and put yourself at risk even if you are not an American but European. Some locals don’t know how to differentiate between an American and European.

However, if you insist traveling to such dangerous countries, consider the following tips to stay safe:

  • Know your risk level being in that country and what you can do to protect yourself.
  • Know your government’s warning about the country.
  • When you are in the country, let your embassy know about your presence in that country.
  • Always abide by the country’s law and respect their customs.
  • Try to wear clothes like the local and blend in like them.
  • Never travel alone even if it is just a distant away from the hotel
    Stay in a recognized and respectable hotels.
  • Use the hotel’s transportation service instead of taking local public transports to avoid getting cheated with high transport charges.
  • Don’t speak to strangers unnecessarily or follow them to unknown location for special deals when shopping in bazaar etc.
  • Look around and be observant about what’s going on around you and don’t stand in a crowded place to avoid getting pick pocketed.
  • Avoid taking any kind of items from unknown people even if they asked you for help to just hold it awhile.
  • Don’t use unofficial money changers in the black market when exchanging your money. You might end up holding fake moneys.
  • Don’t do something silly like wearing gold and get attention from people.
  • Always have the telephone number of your Embassy and local police station in case of emergency.
  • Don’t trust anyone.

    • I hope these tips help you stay safe while you are in a hostile country. The best choice though is to always avoid visiting hostile or politically unstable country like Iraq, Myanmar or Pakistan. You can always wait until the country is much safer or you can choose to visit a different country whereby you can get similar travel experiences you are looking for.
