Many people believe backpacking is meant only for experiencing nature or when trekking and accessing remote terrains or jungles. While it is true backpacking is a comfortable way to experience such adventures, backpacking is also good for traveling in a city.
The good thing about backpacking is that you don’t carry unwanted things with you other than what is much needed. You actually travel light. Backpacking gives you the mobility to move about freely without much hindrance.
Except for family tour, I’d suggest backpacking to all single or solo travelers. When you are backpacking like this, you will not worry about leaving your stuffs in the hotel. Backpacking means you can check in to a hotel and check out anytime easily.
If you’d like to backpack and travel somewhere, the most important tips I can give is, please take sometime reading and understanding how to read a map. Many people still don’t know how to read a map properly and can get lost despite having the map.
There are many types of maps. Some maps only shows you the road from one location to another such as town to a town while other maps includes details such as what you will encounter along the way such as the buildings or even traffic lights.
Understanding how to use the map is important for someone who is backpacking because it means the backpacker will be able to determine the distance from one location to another and the approximate time it will take from one point to another.
This is especially true if you are backpacking and trekking in a remote area and the only place you can put up is the nearest village or camp area. So learn how to use the maps properly. It can save you from a lot of troubles.
When you go on backpacking in a remote area, make sure you have the necessary permits to access the area you are planning to hike or trek. Many countries such as Nepal still require backpackers to have permits to access some parts of their country.
If you are wondering why you will need such permits although you have the visa to visit the whole country, the permits are actually for restricted zones or protected areas for example the place might be the country’s national park which they are trying to preserve.
If you are not sure whether or not you will need a permit to travel or trekking a certain place, check with the local authorities. Sometimes you may not be able to find a local tourist information center, in this case you can visit local police station to find out the information.
The other important factor to look for while backpacking is to know the climate or weather conditions of the place you are planning to visit or trek. Although you are backpacking and have great mobility, you should be ready to face the worst kind of weather conditions.
A raincoat is a must for a backpacker. The type of clothes you wear also plays an important role because you might be traveling or trekking through changing weather conditions from extreme heat to extreme cold.
Wearing something comfortable that can minimize the heat and keep the moisture away is vital for pleasant trekking. A common mistake many backpackers do is to wear jeans believing that because it is thick it can help them overcome cold weather and keep them warm.
Actually jeans material can get wet easily and will take a long time to dry. You will face a lot of difficulties if it rains or when you have to cross a river. So try to wear something comfortable. I would suggest you to wear polypropylene instead.
Before leaving your home, check all your gears are in good condition and working properly. Make sure you know how to use them. This is to avoid wasting time figuring out how to use it in case of emergency.
Remember this, when you are backpacking, you only need to carry the essential gears or things for your survival. Choose what you will need according to the place you are going. Keep your bag light so that you can move easily. Backpacking is about mobility.
